Using simple-to-understand tools, you can program AI, props, buttons, spawners, and lots more to behave in specific ways. SnapMap’s strongest feature is its built-in coding and logic toolset. MO’ BA, Mo ProblemsĬompared to modding, SnapMap feels downright sterile. Doom will never have anything like that level, and that’s a real shame. You flew up and down trying to kill each other on the way. Tyler told me about a Quake level he once made: a silly deathmatch map that was just a very tall room with low gravity.

You can’t stretch or squish them, meaning you’ll likely start recognizing certain modules that get used more often than others.Īnother disappointing rule is that you can’t alter the physics of a level, apart from your movement speed.

( We would’ve prefered “Stardoom Valley.” -Ed.)Įach room module is well-designed and there’s a good amount of variety to choose from but, once again, they can’t be altered in any way, and most only have two or three set snap points to which you can connect other modules-always on the sides, never on the top or bottom. There are a few silly experiments, like a giant playable piano and a map called Harvest Doom, which asks you to plant and harvest ‘crops’ in what is essentially a first-person clicker game.

And there’s only a single tileset-generic, indoor Mars facility.ĭespite these restrictions, the map browser is already full of custom scenarios, co-op survival levels, and recreations of iconic maps from the original Doom, most of which are a lot of fun. You can’t change many character variables beyond basic stuff like health, damage, or movement speed. The rooms you snap together are incredibly static, pretty much only customizable by adding props or demons to them. But it doesn’t give you the power to do much more. It has a refined, easy to use toolset and a good series of tutorials to teach you the basics, so it’s not hard to jump into SnapMap and quickly make a custom level, which is exactly the point of it.

What started out as a feature with serious potential now looks as if it's a noose around DOOM's neck.As a PC gamer, SnapMap’s limitations are immensely disappointing. Well not any more.įor me this is a really disappointing turn of events. When the season pass was announced we said it may be a bit redundant if the quality of the SnapMaps are good enough. Announced last month, the DOOM season pass is now the only way for DOOM players to get access to new 12-player maps.

Secondly there’s the DOOM season pass to consider.

At the time Bethesda’s Pete Hines said ”Everything that we’re doing on the mod side will be through SnapMap.” Mods are an absolute DOOM staple throughout its 23-year history, and this feature has been stripped in favour of SnapMap, which it now turns out is very limited in scope. Firstly, and most importantly, as previously announced DOOM will not have mod support. This is a frustration for a couple of reasons. All well and good, but as it happens the scale of these maps is going to be far smaller than anything id themselves have the freedom put together. Rated and ranked, the best maps will in theory float to the top. There’s a number of pre-built rooms and scenery objects to place, and these can then be shared with other players. The tool itself looks very neat and has some powerful features, allowing users regardless of platform to piece together DOOM maps for co-op and PvP play. That’s down from the 12-players on the nine maps DOOM ships with.

We’re just a matter of weeks away from DOOM’s launch, but it’s only now we find out from id Software via live Twitch stream that its SnapMap level creation tool only allows players to build four-player maps.
